Six Unit-Conversion Traps: Ounces, Gallons, Tons and Temperature Gaps

The arithmetic is easy; the trap is the same word meaning different amounts. When a term differs across systems, the conversion factor is wrong by a wide margin. These six catch people most often.

Trap 1: "ounce" is both weight and volume

Avoirdupois ounce (mass): 1 oz = 28.35 g, 1 lb = 16 oz. Fluid ounce (volume): 1 US fl oz = 29.57 mL, 1 UK fl oz = 28.41 mL.

"8 oz chocolate" in a recipe means mass (227 g); "8 fl oz milk" means volume (237 mL). Mix them up and you are off by more than 8×.

Trap 2: US versus UK gallon

1 US gal = 3.785 L; 1 UK gal = 4.546 L — about 20% apart. The UK has largely moved to litres, but historical data and fuel economy (mpg) still use gallons.

Whenever you see "mpg", check whether it is US or UK: the same car shows roughly 20% higher UK mpg.

Trap 3: three different tons

  • Metric ton (tonne) = 1,000 kg
  • Short ton (US) = 907.2 kg
  • Long ton (UK) = 1,016 kg

Shipping, steel and recovered paper often quote short tons; Europe uses tonnes. The gap is 9%–10% — real money in a contract.

Trap 4: a temperature difference is not a temperature

Converting a temperature: °F = °C × 9/5 + 32.
Converting a difference: multiply by 9/5 only, never add 32.

Going from 20 °C to 30 °C is a 10 °C difference, equal to 18 °F — not 50 °F. In energy or heat-transfer work, this error is large.

Trap 5: area and volume do not scale linearly

A length factor must be squared for area and cubed for volume. With 1 ft = 0.3048 m:

1 ft² = 0.3048² ≈ 0.0929 m²; 1 ft³ = 0.3048³ ≈ 0.0283 m³.

Multiplying an area by 0.3048 is one of the most common mistakes in the book.

Trap 6: Chinese customary units

1 mu ≈ 666.7 m² (not 1,000); 1 jin = 500 g (not 1 kg); 1 chi = 1/3 m ≈ 33.3 cm. In Hong Kong and Taiwan, 1 ping ≈ 3.306 m².

These units are still common in property, land and markets — always confirm whether the figure is customary or metric.
